What's actually in Houston-area tap water
Two things drive most of the complaints we hear. What does whole-home filtration remove that a softener doesn't?
A softener targets hardness minerals. A whole-home carbon stage targets chlorine and chloramine, the taste and smell that come with them, and a range of organic compounds. Run together, you get water that's both easy on your plumbing and pleasant at every tap.
Why does chloramine matter in Houston specifically?
City of Houston and many surrounding systems disinfect with chloramine rather than free chlorine. Chloramine is more stable in the distribution system, which is good for safety but means it needs more carbon contact time to reduce. A filter sized for free chlorine can underperform on a chloraminated supply — sizing matters more here than in a lot of markets.
Will a whole-home filter reduce my water pressure?
Not if it's sized to your peak flow. Pressure complaints almost always trace back to a tank that's too small for the number of fixtures a household runs at once. We size on flow rate, not just occupancy.
How often do the media and filters need service?
It depends on media type, water quality, and household usage. We set a service interval with you at install and tell you what to watch for — returning taste or odor is usually the first sign media is spent.
Do I still need reverse osmosis if I have whole-home filtration?
For drinking and cooking, usually yes. Whole-home carbon improves taste and protects your plumbing; reverse osmosis goes further at a single tap, reducing dissolved solids, lead, and PFAS. They solve different problems, which is why most of our bundles include both.
